Quill: Love Letters – Winning a Heart

Time for another session of Quill: Love Letters.  If you are unfamiliar with Quill, it is a solo letter writing game by Scott Malthouse and published by Trollish Delver Games.  You can get it for pay-what-you-want here.

Here’s are some ground rules I set for this series of letters.  Characters. skills, and ink pot words will be chosen at random.  Each scenario will be played only once and the same character cannot be used in the following scenario.  All words must attempt to be flourished as well to good or ill.

Let’s Start

We are playing as Gerard Sparrow, a lowly monk who spends his days at a secluded monastery in the mountains transcribing the sacred texts into intricate works of art.

Today’s scenario is called “Winning a Heart” in which Gerard is penning a letter to Fran Fletcher, who is a refined aristocrat and sought after by many suitors.  Will Gerard be successful in professing his forbidden love or come off looking like a lustful fool?

Francis respects wealth which is of no help to the penniless Gerard.

Here are Gerard Sparrows’s stats:
Language – 2 dice
Penmanship – 3 dice
Heart – 1 die

Here are the randomized ink pot words for this scenario:
Wine/ Champaign

Play/ Theatrical Performance
Your Body/ Your Form
Painter/ Artist
Dinner/ Caviar

Dearest Fran,

It may come as a surprise to receive a letter from me of all people, but I cannot remove you from my thoughts since we crossed paths this past summer.  We spoke after the stirring theatrical performance in the town square and spent a lovely day together in each other’s company.  However, I did not tell you the whole truth about me. I am a monk at a monastery in the eastern range. (2 points for flourished superior word)

Please do not allow my faith to be seen as a deterrent of my feelings for you.  I will leave this place immediately if you show even the tiniest bit of interest in me.  Thinking of your body helps me forget about the lonely silence in the monastery. (1 point for penmanship)

Sometimes I dream of the vividness of the outside world.  I imagine myself at one of your fancy parties, enjoying dinner, laughs, and the company of your friends and family.  Being a monk is humbling and worthy of praise from others, but life is awfully dreary here.  (1 point for penmanship)

After the party, I dream of drinking the finest wine and dancing to beautiful music.  Oh the things I have yet to experience in life!  I regret not meeting you before I took those solemn vows.  Vows I am willing to renounce for you and you alone. (-2 for flourished inferior word)

One of my childhood friends is the finest painter in town.  As a gift, I would like to offer you a portrait from her.  It would be a priceless work of art that would move even the coldest of hearts. (-2 points for flourished inferior word, +1 for penmanship)

I pray that you contact me.  Are my feelings for you unfounded?

Your admirer from the mountains,
Gerard

So how did we do?

Gerard scored only 2 points for the letter which means Fran’s personal assistant visits the monastery to tell Gerard to not harass their employer anymore.  I’m sure this would be an interesting scene in the monastery!
