Let’s Play Quill – Session 4

For a quick rundown of what I am doing here see the first couple of paragraphs from this post.  One difference is I will be using random.org to do the character generation.

Let’s Start

I will be doing the scenario from the book called “The Archduke” in which we will writing a letter to Archduke Godfrey, a prestigious member of the royal family, to voice our condolences about the death of his sister.

Random character generation gives me that a knight is penning this letter.  Knights have average penmanship, poor language, and strong heart skills.  Let’s go against the grain of a male knight and instead go with Dame Lynvia the Bold.

Dame Lynvia ended up with the augmentation skill which, once per session, gives her another roll on failed heart tests.  Lynvia is also using fine parchment paper for the letter which gives her a +1 to penmanship.

Here are Dame Lynvia’s stats:
Language: 1 die
Penmanship: 2 dice
Heart: 3 dice

And here are the randomized ink pot words we can use in our letter:
Young Boy/ Young Harold of Whent
Town/ Riverton
Angels/ Seraphim
Fields/ Heather Fields
Rode Horses/ Rode Stallions

I will bold the scoring/non-scoring words and after each paragraph I will denote the score of the paragraph in parenthesis.  The total score will relay the art dealer’s reaction to our letter.

A Solemn Correspondence…

Dear Lord Godfrey,

I recently received a letter informing me of the passing of your dear sister Mary.  The news came a shock to me as we were the same age and had me questioning the brevity of our lives.  It seems like yesterday we were small children running the streets of town and nagging you, her older brother, whom Mary loved so dear. (1 point for penmanship)

I remember the golden fields behind your manor well.  Mary and I would spend the lovely summer mornings chasing butterflies along the edge of the wood.  Then we would sit by the brook, looking for fish and telling each other stories about fairies and witches of the deep woods.  Time went slowly back then. (1 point for penmanship, -1 point for flourished inferior word)

When we got older, I would sneak with Mary to go watch you and the older boys as you all daringly rode horses near the stables.  The maneuvers you used to pull while at full gallop would cause us to gasp in fear.  Mary always worried you would get hurt but I assured her that you were the most skilled rider in town. (1 point for penmanship, -1 point for flourished inferior word)\

Remember when that arrogant, young Harold of Whent challenged you to duel for the favor of Lady Istina?  You were prepared and waiting at the dueling grounds but Harold never arrived and we soon found out he left town.  I am not sure Mary told you and I promised to keep the secret for her, but Mary is the reason that Harold left.  Mary told Harold that if he dueled against you, she’d murder him and his entire family.  Mary could tell a great story and I guess Harold truly believed her.  (2 points for flourished superior word)

Lord Godfrey, I understand that Mary was your younger sibling but she was concerned with your well-being even as a young child.  This is why I write to you today.  How are you handling her passing? Put your faith in the lord and know that Mary is among the holy Seraphim now.  She will always protect you. (2 points for flourished superior word)

My Condolences,
Dame Lynvia McDouglas

So how did we do?

We scored a total of 5 points for the letter which means the Archduke responds kindly but does criticize the letter and likely will not be in touch for few months.  Hope he doesn’t criticize too harshly or Dame Lynvia may be looking for a duel herself!

That completes all the scenarios from from the core Quill book.  Stay tuned as I will be moving on to Quill: Love Letters next!
